Boys at many schools wore plain grey socks. Quite a number of prep schools had special socks done. These school socks were particularly common at prep schools, in part because so many of the schools required short trousers as part of the uniform. These were usually grey knee socks with colored bands at the top in the school color or colors. This was usually done in two basic ways. Some schools had usually socks with colored bands at the top. Other schools ahain had mostly grey socks done with the entire turn over top done in a contrasting color. Some schools had knee socks in destinctive colors rather than grey. This was more common in Scotland than in England. Almost always these were knee socks, but some schools had ankle socks for the summer term that were also done in the school colors. There were many different combinations. Schools varied as to how insistent they were on the wearing of the proper school colors. Some schools insisted and almost all boys wore them. They were optional at a number of schools.

This gives quite a few possiblr variations, but with several hundered schools, some cominations or similar combinatiins were worn at several different schools. A few schools have very destinctive cominations that were not worn at any other school.
