Plain grey sweaters are very common in Britain. There were other colors, but the plain grey sweater was by far the most common. This was the basic uniform color, along with grey shirts, trousers, and socks. Some schools even had grey suits or grey blazers. Plain grey sweaters were worn before the ones with colored trim appeared. Many schools continued to have grey sweaters without the colored trim. The same was true of the knee socks. This varied from school to school. Some schools liked the colore trim as part of the uniform gave a smart look and added destinctive color to the otherwise drab grey items. Some schools allowed boys to wear the plain grey items even when the school uniform comsisted of sweaters and other items with the colored trim. Other schools were more insistent that the colored trim items be worn. Almost always when the trim was used, it was used on grey sweaters.
