Grey Sweaters

Plain grey sweaters are very common in Britain. There were other colors, but the plain grey sweater was by far the most common. This was the basic uniform color, along with grey shirts, trousers, and socks. Some schools even had grey suits or grey blazers. Plain grey sweaters were worn before the ones with colored trim appeared. Many schools continued to have grey sweaters without the colored trim. The same was true of the knee socks. This varied from school to school. Some schools liked the colore trim as part of the uniform gave a smart look and added destinctive color to the otherwise drab grey items. Some schools allowed boys to wear the plain grey items even when the school uniform comsisted of sweaters and other items with the colored trim. Other schools were more insistent that the colored trim items be worn. Almost always when the trim was used, it was used on grey sweaters.

Many prep schools to add a little color to the uniforms had sweaters trimmed in the school colors. This gave the uniform a more destinctive look as many of the ndividual items were essentially the same and grey was a very standard color. Often schools chosde sweaters with trim. Sweater Types

Most of the sweaters with colored trim were "V"-neck sweaters, these of course were the sweaters made to be worn with ties. We have noted trim on crew-neck sweaters and other color sweaters, but this was not very common.

Coordination

The colored trim was normally coordinated with the school necktie and the blazer and was commonly repeated on colored bands on the kneesocks. . The trim picked up one or two collars of the necktie. The colored trim sweaters were most common att schools which required neckties. The neckties and blazers were commonly done in same bright colors which contrasted to the basic grey of the sweaters. Earlier it was also commony coordinated with the cap, but caps by the 1980s were becoming less common..
