Figure 1.--The Gallerie Lafayette department store in Paris during 1908 offered several different styles of headwear for boys and young men, including a sailor cap and hat. |
The Galery Lafayete, a large Paris Department store, on one page in one page of
Après offered five different styles of hats and caps. There were both a sailor cap and hat as well as styles like the English bowler and boater. There is no indication as to the age at which these caps and hats were worn. The beret is not offered.
The ad copy reads, "Cape dernier genre, feutre noir mat ... Fr 5.50 et 6.60. En qualité supérienre. Prix ... Fr 8.50 et 10.00." It looks to be an English styled bowler hat.
No illistration was provided, but text about "casquette" was included with the caps and hats. The ad copy reads, "Casqurette anglaise en draperie Douvealé anglaise, visière drap apreil.
The ad copy reads, "Canotier paille rustic, galon marine, garniure soigmee. Prix ... Fr 1.95, 2.75 et 4.50. En belle paille satin, galon marine. Prix ... 1.95, 3.75, et 4.50. This looks rather like a boater.
The ad copy reads, "Jean Bart en belle paile anglaise garni marine, avec ou sans inscription. Sans précédent. Prix ... Fr 3.90. En paille satinée, garnitute en cuir. Exceptionnel. Prix ... Fr 2.45." HBC is not sure just who Jean Bart was and why this cap is named after him. Presumably he is a French sailor.
