Unknown Romper Suit, 1908

Figure 1.--The Gallerie Lafayette department store in Paris during 1908 offered several different styles of headwear for boys and young men, including a sailor cap and hat.

A HBC reader has provided us an illustration from a French publication. We are sure of the actual source. This is the earliest romper we have noted in French publications. We do not know who introduced it and for that reason can not at this time definitively substantiate the date. Wedo not have any of the ad copy and can not even be sure that the term "baboteuse" was used at this time. Note the romper back view is long sleeved while open matches front view. It isa back buttoning outfit without the bow that appeared on later models. There is a suare cut open collar.
