French mail order catalogs and clothing advertisements offer a very useful time line on changing fashion trends. We note that boys rompers suits werevery fashionable in 1949.
Rompers in 1949 were very popular for young children. They were exclusively for boys. They were primarily a play garment to be worn around the home are for outings to the beach, but there were dressier versions as well. One fashion magazine offered patternd for dressy romper outfits for boys up to 7 years of age.
HBC is just beginning its assesment of French fashion magazines. We do not yet have detailed information on these magazines, including L'écho de la mode. We have noted an item from Le petit écho de la mode de la mode advertising dressy romper patterns
for "garçons modèles". The rompers in different styles were to be made in popeline, flannel, amd other material for boys 2-7 years of age.
Rompers are often seen as a summer garment for warm weather gear. In actuality, French boys wore rompers year round. They were more common in the summer, especially the sunsuit type rompers. A boy, however, might wear play rompers and dress rompers even in the winter. This was especially true of dressy rompers. A boy might wear them for pcial occasions even in the winter, such as Chriustmas. The important French fashion magazine Le Petit Echo de la Mode in Dcember 1949 pictured a little boy in rompers under the Cristmas tree.
"Mon ouvrage" in May 1949 showcased a fashionable romper suit for a boy's Easter outfit. It was worn with a blouse that had puff sleeves. We have no details on the specifuications of the pattern which would have been included in the magazine.
