Some of our HBC readers have commented that while HBC is extremely informative that it is a little on the overly serious academic side. He has suggested that readers contribute humorous captions for some of their favorite images. HBC admits to a lack of humor and is more than willing to provide a forum for readers that are amused or a least bemused by some of the historical images. This photograph was taken at an English public school sometime in the 1950s. The reader finds it amusing that even senior secondary level boys wear short pants and kneesocks as part of their school uniform.

The Image

This photograph was taken in an English public school during the 1950s. As HBC readers know, public schools are a misnomer. They are in fact exclusive private schools with expensive fees. School uniforms regulations varied. Virtually all of the school had strict uniform rules, but the actual uniforms were qite varied. Some of the uniforms were centuries old (the famed hospital schools) which were an exception to the expensive fees. Others had traditional uniforms, but only a cetury or two old, like Eton and Harrow. The boys at some schools all wore longs and at other all shorts. Many schools required the younger boys to swear shorts. At this school many of the older boys wore shorts.

Captions

HBC readers have suggested the following captions:

"Gallant steam cleans each major part of his engine while in proper protective gear. Goofus dives under the hood in his soccer uniform".

[HBC note: The boy is not wearing a soccer uniform, but his school uniform. The boy in the foreground probably wears the same uniform under his coveralls.]

"Gee, I hope these tires aren't Firestones!"

"Nope, doesn't matter how small the car is. The V8 from the Revell model just won't work!"

"While filming 'Star Wars' at Leavesden in 1976, George Lucas also worked on his little-known, never-released backup project, "British Graffiti".

And of course the classic; "HBC encourages all readers to dress properly while working on or near machinery. The boy on the left, for example, has Nomex kneesocks."
