Spanish Royalty: Alfonso XIII--Children


Figure 1.--Here are the three oldest children of King Alfonso XIII, the Prince of Asturias (Crown Prince Alphonso Pius), Princess Beatriz, and Prince Jaime. The portrait would have been taken about 1910.

King Alfonso XIII and Queen Ena had seven children. It was a large happy family with the children fairly close in age. The revolution establishing the Republic (1931) and the Spanish Civil War (1936-39), affected the status of the Spanish royal family. Alphonso Pius and Alfonso's other older sons abdigated or renounced their claims to the crown. The Republic overthrew the monarchy (1931). General Francisco Franco led a revolution which led to the Civil War and overthrew pf the the Republic (2936-39). Franco did not, however, immediately restore the monarchy. It was to be a younger son, Prince Juan Carlos, that would eventually regain the Spanish crown for his son that his own father had lost.

Alphonso Pius (1907-1938)

Alphonso Pius de Bourbon of Cavadonga, Count of Cavadonga. He was born in 1907. As a boy he was usually dressed identically with his younger brother Jaime. Alphonso renounced succession. A Heamphiliac which forced his abdication in 1933. He Married Edelmira Ignacia Sampedro y Robato at Lausanne, Switzerland during 1933, but divorce in 1937. He then married Martha Esther Rocafort y Altuzarra in 1937, but divorced in 1938. He died as the result of a motor accident in Miami, Florida during 1938.

Jaime Luitpold (1908-75)

Jaime Luitpold de Bourbon of Segovia, Duke of Segovia. He was born in 1908 at La Granja, San Ildefonso, Segovia. We have no specific information about his childhood. Avaialble images suggest that he was normally dressed identically with his older brother Alfonso. He acceded in 1933. He married Emmanuela Vittoria del Dampierre during 1935 at San Ignacio, Rome. They divorced after World War II in 1947. He also renounced the succession anf became the Duke of Anjou. He died in 1975 at the Cantonal Hospital, St. Gall, Switzerland.

Beatriz Isabel Frederica Alfonsa (1909- )

Beatriz Isabel Frederica Alfonsa de Bourbon, Infanta. She was born in 1909. Beatrix married Torlonia Alessandro of Civitella-Cesi, Prince of Civitella-Cesi duting 1935 at the Jesuit Church of Jesus in Rome. They had four children.

Son (1910)

A stillborn son was delivered in 1910 at the Royal Palace in Madrid.

Maria Christina (1911- )

Maria Christina de Bourbon, Infanta. She was born in the Royal Palace in Madrid during 1911. She mairred Enrico Eugenio, 1st Count Marone at St. Camilo Church in Rome during 1940. They had four childlren.

Juan (1913-93)

Juan de Bourbon of Spain, Count of Barcelona. He was born in 1913 at La Granja in San Ildefonso, Segovia. After his elder brother's renounced the successiin, Juan became the heir apparent. But Franco refused to allow him to become king. Juan mairred Princess Maria de las Mercedes of Bourbon-Sicil in 1935 at Santa Maria degli Angeli, Rome. They had four children. Franco agreed upon his death to allow Juan's oldest son, Juan Carlos to become king. He insisted on overseeing the boy's education and early career.

Gonzalo Manuel Maria Bernado (1914-34)

Gonzalo Manuel Maria Bernado de Bourbon. He was born in 1914 at the Royal Palce in Madrid. He died in 1934 at Pörtschach, Carinthia. Gonzalo was a heamophiliac and died as the result of a motor accident.
