Spanish Royalty: Alfonso XII (1874-85)


Figure 1.--This portrait taken in 1886 shows Maria Cristiana, the wife of Alfonso XII after his death, with their children. The baby is Alfonso XIII. Maria Cristiana faced a troubled regency after her husband's untimely death.

Alfonso XII, King of Spain, was a popular monarch who consolidated the monarchy, suppressed republican agitation, restored order, and introduced a modern constitution. Alfonso was born in Madrid during 1857. His father was Francisco de Asis, King of Spain (1822- ). His mother was Isabella II de Bourbon, Queen of Spain (1830- ). His mother took him from Spain when she was deposed in the Revolution of 1868. He was educated in Paris, Vienna, and England (Sanhurst). His mother formally abdicated in 1870, but Alfonso did not return to Spain to exercie his rights until 1875 when Gerneral Arsenio Martinez de Campos, a monarchist, summoned him to assume the throne. Alfonso defeated the remaoning Carlists and introduced a modern constitution. He married in 1878 to Maria Cristina of Austria. They had three children: Maria de las Mercedes (1880- ), Maria Theresa de Bourbon (1882- ), and Alfonso XIII (1886- ). Alfonso XII died in 1885 before is only son and heir was born in 1886.

Parents

His father was Francisco de Asis, King of Spain (1822- ) Francisco's father was Francisco de Paula, Duke of Cadiz (1794- ). His mother was Luisa de Bourbon of Sicily (1804- ). Alfonso's mother was Isabella II de Bourbon, Queen of Spain (1830- ). Her father was Ferdinand VII of Spain, King of Spain, (1784- ) and Mary Christina de Bourbon Sicily (1806- ).

Siblings

Alfonso had two sisters. His sister Eulalia de Asis de la Piedad, Infanta of Spain was born in 184? His other sister. Isabella de Bourbon was born in 1851. Alfpnso was the youngest child born in 1857.

Childhood

Alfonso was born in Madrid during 1857. His mother took him from Spain when she was deposed in the Revolution of 1868.

Marriage

He married in 1878 to Maria Cristina of Austria (1858-1929). Her father was Karl Ferdinand.

Children

They had three children: Maria de las Mercedes (1880- ), Maria Theresa de Bourbon (1882- ), and Alfonso XIII (1886- ). Alfonso XII died in 1885 before is only son and heir was born in 1886.

Reign

His mother formally abdicated in 1870, but Alfonso did not return to Spain to exercie his rights until 1875 when Gerneral Arsenio Martinez de Campos, a monarchist, summoned him to assume the throne. Alfonso defeated the remaining Carlists who supported the descendents of Don Carlos (1788-1855) as the rightful king. King Alfpnso in 1786 summoned the Cortes, the representative body of Spain to draft a new constitution that introduced a two chamber legislative body on the English parlimentary model. Alfonso relied heavily on his prime minister Antonio Cánovas de Castillo. Alfonso's untimely death was followed by the troubled regency of his widow Maria Cristiana.
