School Uniform:  Private Catholic School: Ecole Saint-Joseph d'Allex (1980s)

Figure 1.--The boys from this French school were visited London in 19??. Note the string ties they wear rather than a necktie.

Uniform

HBC has only limited information on the school. We note students at the Ecole Saint-Joseph d'Allex wearing a uniform of blue shirts, string ties, blue, shorts, and white kneesocks. Boys were wearing this uniform for a trip to London in 1984. This may, however, had been an earlier style and in 1984 just used by the choir. This photo is from a catholic magazine Revue de Saint Joseph, published in July 1984. This photo pictures a trip to London by the Ecole Saint-Joseph d'Allex. Other photographs in the magazine show the schoolboys dressed like most French schoolboys weaing casual shirts and pants.

A French reader reports that, "What is interesting in the photo is that the two bigger lads wear what we call in France 'culotte anglaise'(English short trousers). This is a style of short trouser very long, up to the knee or just above and tight. Generally in grey or navy blue, in flanel or Tergal (Terylene) or cord I would say used now by boys up to 7 or 8 as dressy clothes.

Magazine Caption

The legend of this particular photo says "la phot telle que nous révions la faire !" ("The photo we would haved dreamt to snap!") HBC is not sure how to interpret this. We think that this may have been the school uniform in the 1950s and 60. We note that it is very similar to the one worn by boys in the French film, Murmur of the Heart. We believe that some schools may have retained the traditional school uniform for the school choir. Perhaps the school choir was visiting London. Hopefully our French readers will provide us some insights on this.

TheFrench reader who provide the photograph as read all the article and he does mnot think it is a visiting choir group. He also says that the photo was not snapped during the 1984 trip because a photo of the trip shows Big Ben behind scaffoldings.

School Details

The Ecole Saint-Joseph d'Allex appears to be a private Catholic elementary school. One French reader informs us that he is not familiar with he school which is at the town Allex in the "Drôme "deparment. He points out, however, that many Catholic schools are namend " St Joseph".
