School Uniform:  Private Catholic School: Lycee St. Malo Sixième A (1920-21)

Figure 1.--This is the Sixième A form or class at the Lycee St. Malo in 1920-21. Most of the boys wear a military-styled uniform, mostly with short pants and kneesocks, but several boys wear suits and sailor suits. One reader suggests it was the boarders that wore the uniforms.

The Sixième A form or class would be the first year of secondary studies. There was a Sixième B class that studied with the older Cinquième form. The boys would have been about 12 years old. Most wear the school uniform, but several boys wear sailor suits and a various fashions of suits. There are 15 of 23 boys wearing the school uniform. One reader suggests it was the boarders that wore the uniforms. I am not sure why that would be, Note one of the boys in the school uniform adopts a Napoleonic pose with his hand in hos jacket. Curiously the boy at the lower right wears a smock, the only boy in the school to do so. Four boys wear different styles of sailor suits. This was the oldestvclass in which boy still wore sailor suits.
