Many French school childeen until the 1960s wore school snocks. Smocks especially at this age were commonly worn at some French schools. This was not the case at this school. Only two boys here wear smocks. I thought smocks were more popular at the time. Both boys wear the same front-buttoning styles, but in different colors. I'm not sure how to interpret this. We have seen schools in the 1950s where large numbers of boys wore smocks. But this varied widely from school to school. It looks like that unless the school encouraged it, few French mothers sent their boys to school in smocks. Or perhps smocks declined in popularity during the War. Perhaps our French readers will have some insights here.
