Individual French Schools: Ecole Talange

Figure 1.-- Here we sse the Ecole Talange in 1931. We have no details about the school at this time other than a 1931 image. It looks to be quite a substantial school. The image we have is a class of boys. Presumably this was the boys' school and there was another school for the girls. Click on the image to see the rest of the class.

Presumably this was the boys' school and there was another school for the girls. Small village schools were often coeducational, but towns which were big enough for two schools, commonly separated them by gender. As far as we can tell this is a town primary school. We assume Talange is the name of the town. The boys here wear short pants suits or sweaters. Quite a few boys wear suit jackets, but only a few boys with ties. We do not know what kind of caps they wore. Notice one boy boy wears a long winter scarfe. We have note quite a few images of French boys during the winter wearing these scarves with suits, but without overcoats. All the boys we can see wear short pants, mostly with kneesocks. A couple boys wear long stockings. (These two boys are at the right and can be seen by clicking on the image.) Note that none of the boys wear smocks. We have seen other French schools in the 1930s where several boys wear smocks. We are not sure just what accounted for these differences.
