Here we have an unidentified French primary school. From the look of the building in the back ground we might say that it was a provincial school in southern France. We do know that the full school portrait was taken in 1981. The electrical connection looks surprisingly primitive for France in the 1980s. The weather seems a little chilly and the children are outfitted in a wide range of colorful sweaters. Most of the boys seem to wear long pants, but some boys wear shorts pants as well. Notably they are the long knee-length short pants that the French call English-style shorts. This style was to spread to Britain, but not for several years. Interestingly at the time, English boys were wearing very short cut school shorts and calling them continental-style, meaning primarily French style. One boy wears Argyle kneesocks which fashionably match his sweater. Another boy wears English style school sandals. None of the children are wearing smocks. The school in general seems representative of how French children dressed in school. By the 1980s there was no real difference between Parisian fashions for children and provincial fashions, no doubt the result of the mass media.
