School Wear at an Individual Primary School: Boys' Garments--Sweaters (1936)

Figure 1.--This boy wears quite a destinctive jacket with a large white collar. Several boys in the class had other interesting jackets as well as suit jackets that would be seen as modern looking. The collar looks somewhat like an Eton collar, but it is not stiff and doest not appear to be detachable. Notice the badge that he is wearing. Image courtesy of the MD collection.

Sweaters were clearly popular garments, even the teacher wears one. Several boys wear different kinds of sweaters, both long sleeve and sleeveless collars. There are also sweaters with collars. Many sweaters seem more like jackets. Sone have zippers rather than buttons. Some of the boys wear their sweaters over shirts. Other boys look to be wearing sweaters instead of shirts, although they may be worn more likre jackets so you can not see their shirts. Quite a few look like they were knitted by mother or grandmother. The number of sweaters being worn suggest that the photograph was taken with the weather was still chilly, but other garmemnts suggest that it was not yet the height of winter.
