Colonial Tunisian School: Sainte Agnès

Figure 1.--Here we see children at the Saint Agnes School. We are not sure, but this just seems to be the younger children. The girls wear little dresses. The boys wear mostly various short pants outfits, but some of the boys wear rompers.

This is the Sainte Agnès School in Ferryville. We do not know much about the school. It is clearly a Catholic school. Not only does the name suggest a Catholic school, but we see a nun in the background. The children here are very young. A French reader tells us that they would be 5-7 years of age. The photograph clearly shows a larger group than a single class. This suggests to us that the children may the younger childrern at a primary school, perhaps the Maternelle and Cours Préparatoire (CP) class. The school building looks to large to be just a maternelle school. Here we see children at the Saint Agnes School. We are not sure, but this just seems to be the younger children. The girls wear little dresses. The boys wear mostly various short pants outfits, but some of the boys wear rompers. For some reason, none of the children seem to be wearing smocks. A French reader writes, "One can see here the typical look of French children during the early 1950s. In Paris, Marseille, Lyon, ect one could see the same styles. The Peter Pan collar (col Claudine) was more popular the early 1950s than in the 1940s after World War II. This style was worn by boys untill 8-10 years old. One can see here aboys wearing traditional rompers. Two boys have kept their long hair. Notice the little girls with bows in their hair. It was fshionable at the time. The bow normaly was the same color as the girl's dress or simply white .
