Colonial Tunisian School: Laroquette School (Tindja, Tunisia)

Figure 1.--We believe this is a French Tunisian class probably in Ferryville, but can not confirm it at this time. We note the tirm "Tindja et Guengla". We are not sure if this was a school name. The class looks like an older primary class. The photograph was taken in 1955 just before independence.

We believe this is a French Tunisian class probably in Ferryville, but can not confirm it at this time. We note the tirm "Tindja et Guengla". We are not sure if this was a school name. A HBC reader explains, "The name of the school was Laroquette and it was situated at Tindja. or suburbs Tindja, Guengla and Ferryville are all towns at or near Lake Bizerta, the large port city. The class looks like an older primary class. The photograph was taken in 1955 just before independence. The boys all wear a variety of shirts and short pants. One boy wears bib-front shorts. Another boy looks to be wearing a smock. A reader writes, "while it is difficult to tell, it looks to me like the boy on the far right may be wearing a bib front romper." Unfortunately it is not possible to tell from the photograph. HBC thinks that this unlikely. We have noted boys in the first or less commonly the second year of primary school wearing rompers, but have never noted boys this age wearing rompers. We think it is much more likely that the boy here is wearing bib-front shorts.
