School smocks were made of several differemt materials. Wool and cotton are the most common. After World War II rayon and rayon blened fabrics also appeared.

Cotton

Avantages/Advantages

Difficilement inflammable. C'est la seule matière appropriée pour les cours de physique-chimie. Not easily flammable. It is the only suitable matter for the courses of physics-chemistry.

Inconvénients/Disadvantages

Lavage et séchage longs. Tissu lourd à porter. Perméable à l'eau et n'offre qu'une protection très insuffisante. Long washing and drying. Heavy fabric to carry. Not waterproof and offers only one very insufficient protection.

Tergal/Wool

Avantages/Advantages

Assez léger à porter et relativement aisé d'entretien. Light enough to wear and relativeky easy to maintain.

Inconvénients/Disadvantages

Assez inflammable. Ne doit pas être utilisé pour les cours de chimie. Perméable à l'eau et n'offre qu'une protection assez insuffisante. Peu solide. Enough flammable. Does not have to be used for the courses of science. Perméable to water and offers only one rather insufficient protection. Not very solid.

Nylon

Avantages/Inconvénients

Entretien très aisé. Lavage et séchage en une demi-heure. Le tablier peut être lavé le soir et remis le lendemain matin. Très résistant. Presqu'imperméable. Offre la meilleure protection contre les projections et taches de toute nature. Nylon Advantages Very easy maintenance. Washing and drying in half an hour. The smock can be washed the evening and be given the next morning. Very resistant. Almost impermeable. Offer best protection against projections and spots of any nature.

Inconvénients/Disadvantages

Inflammable. Ne doit pas être utilisé pour les cours de chimie. Disadvantages Flammable. Does not have to be used for the courses of chemistry.

La recommandation de l'A.P.T.E.

Par sa facilité d'entretien et sa solidité, le nylon est de loin la matière la mieux adaptée au tablier de classe et doit être recommandée en priorité, aussi bien à l'école primaire qu'au secondaire. Néanmoins, il convient de le proscrire, au collège et au lycée, pour les blouses destinées au cours de physique et de chimie, en raison de son inflammabilité trop aisée.

Nylon is by far the preferred material for school smocks for its ease of maintenance and its solidity. It is the material most suited for school smocks, both in primary and secondary schools. Nevertheless, it is advisable not to use nylon smocks or blouses because of its flamibility.

La forme

Le rôle premier du tablier et de protéger. Il doit donc être suffisament couvrant pour remplir correctement cette fonction. Il convient d'éviter les formes fantaisie, type chasuble, blouson etc., sans doute seyantes mais d'une efficacité très aléatoire. Dans le même ordre d'idées, il vaut mieux éviter les modèles à manches courtes. Le tablier doit être aussi pratique et facile à mettre ; il nous semble ainsi préférable de privilégier les modèles fermés sur le devant, boutonnés ou par fermeture "éclair" (zip). Le zip présente en outre l'avantage d'assurer une fermeture complète du tablier, et donc une meilleur protection de l'élève, mais est plus difficile à remplacer que des boutons en cas de "pépin".

The primary purpose of the smock is to protect. It must thus be sufficiently large to fulfill this function correctly. It is advisable to avoid the imaginitive styles, standard chasuble [HBU is unfamiliar with this term], wind-breaker etc, which are not large enought to be effectuve. In the same way, it is to better avoid the models with short sleeves. The smock must be also practical and easy to put on. It seems thus preferable to us to select the front closing styles, either buttoned or by closing "flash" (zip). The zip has moreover the advantage of ensuring a complete closing of the smock, and thus better a protection of the pupil, but is more difficult to replace than buttons in the event of "pip".
