Strap Shoes: Black Hoisery

Figure 1.--This photograph was probably taken in the 1890s. Notice that the boy in the large ruffled collar wearing black three-quarter socks with strap shoes.

Black stockings and socks were most commonly worn with strap shoes in the late 19th century, except for very young boys. Black stockings were especially common in the late 19th century. Even as white socks and stockings became more common after the turn of the 20th century, black continued to be seen as suitable for formal occassions. Black hosiery with strap shoes had become much less common than ikn the 19th century. Some other very dark colors such as dark brown were also worn. Strap shoes were worn with ankle, three quarter, and kneesocks as well as long stockings. Black socks were also worn with the different styles of strap shoes.
