Scottish Kilts: Indiviual Experiences--Wedding

Figure 1.--s.

There was always "Sunday best," but of course that was not out of the norm. Kilts worn at weddings and special events have always been as far as I remember popular. I think most mothers put their boys into kilts mainly because they looked so smart, and to a certain extent it was also a sign of relative affluence years ago. Kilts have never been what you could call "cheap". When I was really young back in the late 1950s and early 60s, I wore the kilt to school along with several other boys, and certainly to Sunday school. But that was for only a couple of years, and ended up being only on Sundays, until the age of 9 or so, then that stopped also.

When my cousin announced that she was getting married, it was decided that her youngest brother and myself would be page boys. That was bad enough I thought, but it was also decided that we would both wear kilts. I was 11 or 12 at the time, and my cousin a year older. I hadn't worn a kilt for a couple of years or so, but he regularly wore one, so it was no major fuss for him. In fact he quite liked wearing his. I remember going to the kilt outfitter/hire shop, to get measured for the kilt, and white dress shirt which had lace cuffs. There was also a jabot (ruffle for those of you not in the know) which went with the shirt, and to finish off, a white dress sporran, white socks with green flashes and black patent shoes. Looking back, and seeing today the same outfits, it was really quite smart.
