Unidentified German Family Photographic Album: First Boy--Boat Expedition

Figure 1.--We note a boat excursion aboard the ship Kronprinz which looks to be an excursion ship. The name (Crown Prince) suggests of course it is a pre-World War I ship. We are not sure just where the ship opperated. Notice the boys in the white caps, they may br boys in the Marine HJ division.

We note a boat excursion aboard the ship Kronprinz which looks to be an excursion ship. The name (Crown Prince) suggests of course it is a pre-World War I ship. We are not sure just where the ship opperated. The boy here was Saalfeld, a town in the Saalfeld-Rudolstadt district of Thuringia, a state in southern Germany. Possibly it was the Baltic. Thuringia is of course quite a distance from Germany's Baltic sea coast in the north. Perhaps the ship which seems small opperated on a lake or river. We also do not know where the ship was headed. We do note a photograph of a beach resort. Perhps this was where they were headed. The boys seem to have enjoyed the outing and the trip on the ship. We do note a Baltic Sea trip in another HJ album. This was on a much larger ship.

The Kronprinz

We note a boat excursion aboard the ship Kronprinz which looks to be an excursion ship. The name (Crown Prince) suggests of course it is a pre-World War I ship. The ship is flying a large HJ banner. Thus it may well be a ship that the HJ itself owned and operated. The HJ seized the property of other German youth groups after the NAZIS seized power. Perhaps this is gow it was acquired. It appars to be being used primarily for transportation.

Location

We are not sure just where the ship opperated. The boy here was Saalfeld, a town in the Saalfeld-Rudolstadt district of Thuringia, a state in southern Germany. Possibly it was the Baltic. Thuringia is of course quite a distance from Germany's Baltic sea coast in the north. Perhaps the ship which seems small opperated on a lake or river. The photograph of the ship shows it on a large bodt of water--surely not a river. But we are not positive it was the Baltic.

HJ Leaders

We see some of the HJ leaders on the bridge with the captain. They look to us to be older teenagers and not adult leaders. This was common place. There were adults involved at the higher levels of the HJ. The leaders actually working with the boys, however, were mostly older boys and youths. Note that the ship captain and HJ leader appears to be the only people aboard wearing caps. The mahor exception seems to be boys in white caps, presumably boys in the Marine HJ division.

HJ Boys Aboard Ship

The boys seem to have enjoyed the outing and the trip on the ship. Most of the pssangrs seem to be HJ boys. Perhaps this is because the boy tking the pictures wanted to show his feiends. The boys are all uniformed, but notably many are not wearing their caps. This seems to be the case in many informal HJ photographs. We note one photograph of the boys posed around one of the lifeboats.

Destination

We also do not know where the ship was headed. We do note a photograph of a a large number of boys at a beach. Perhps this was where they were headed. We do note a Baltic Sea trip in another HJ album. This was on a much larger ship. If the ship was operating on the baltic, perhaps they were headed to one of the holiday islands in the Baltic. It may have been the location of a HJ camp. We notice several photographs from a HJ camp. We are not sure, however, if the camp photographs are connected with the ship trip.
