Nationalist Youth Groups: Nationalist Images

Figure 1.--Nationalist youth groups stressed military drill and as they got older more and more military training was added to the programs, including handling fire arms. We at first thought these were Hitler Youth boys. But the uniform is not right. Note the tassle on the one boys's cap. I'm not sure what that meant. Also note that the other boys are not wearing black shorts. I'm not sure just what uniform they are wearing. The emblem on one boy's cap looks like a Luftwaffe emblem. Nationalist youth groups stressed military drill and as they got older more and more military training was added to the programs, including handling fire arms. We at first thought these were Hitler Youth boys, in part because the boys look German. But the uniforms are not right. We thought they might be some kind of specialized HJ unit, but that would not explain the differences. Note the tassle on the one boys's cap. I'm not sure what that meant. Also note that the other boys are not wearing black shorts. I'm not sure just what uniform they are wearing. The emblem on one boy's cap looks like a Luftwaffe emblem. A reader writes, "Though that is nevertheless odd as I recognise more than one Nazi badge. For example, I have the badge on the left (the swastika in a circle on an arrow pointing upwards) which was given to land army boys from 15-18 before they could be used as Hitler's gun fodder in the early days of the war I think. My HJ and Third Reich knowledge is not what it once was." Another HBU reader writes, "While browsing I came across this photo which showed different uniforms. One of my reference books had the same photo here but with an extra boy. The captaion reads 'Dutch, Danish and Norwegian land-service candidates'." This would explain the different uniforms, but it raises other questions. We are not sure what the Land Service was. We wonder if this is not a mistranslation. Rather the boys might be the nationalist youth groups promoted by NAZI and colaborationist officials during the World War II NAZI occupationss. Another question is what the boys from these different countries are doing together. We suspect that they are in Germany at a HJ camp.
