Italian Fascist Youth Group: Colonial Groups--Purpose

Figure 1.-- We think that the colonial Fascist youth organizations emphasised the submission to colonial authorities and the superiority of Italian culture. As far as I know there was no rasist compont here. The goal was to make the colonials good Italians. The goal of moderizing society and educating the children was an excuse for colonialism. The photos of these youth were often used for Fascist propaganda in Italy. A good example of Fascist propagabnda was the book Il Mascal di Moggio (1938). The image here is from the book.

Colonial Purposes

We think that the colonial Fascist youth organizations emphasised the submission to colonial authorities and the superiority of Italian culture. As far as I know there was no rasist component here. We do not mean to suggest that eacism did not exist in Italy. The Italins, however, appear to be less affected by racism than many other Europeans and there was not the virulent form of racism as adopted by the NAZIs that led to the murder of millions as a result of their race during World War II. Italian Fascists were increasingly affected by the NAZIs. Mussolini approved a NAZI-style racist law (1938). Even so, virulent racism never became common in Italy as it was in Germany. The Italian goal with these colonial youth groups seems to have been to make their colonial subjects good Italians. The goal of moderizing society and educating the children was an excuse for colonialism. We do not yet have information on the goal of these groups in the colonies. The mere fact that the Italian authorities organized the groups is important. The NAZIs in their Eastern European colonies never did this. They never had the goal of turning the Slavs of Eastern Rurope unto NAZIs because of the dominant racial element in their ideology. The Italians unemunered by the NAZI racism seem to have conceived the idea of turning colonial people into Italians regardless of their race.

Il Mascal di Moggio (1938). I'm not sure how to translate the title. An Italian reader writes, "Mascal is a Coptic festivity. Moggio is a village near Milan. Il Mascal di Moggio could be The Mascal of/from Moggio, but I don't understand the meaning.
