Chilean Cub Scout Uniforms

Figure 1.--These Chilean Cubs were photographed in 1996 with two Scouts. They wear a uniform looking very much like the English Cub uniform--with a slightly different style of peaked cap.

The Cub uniform in Chile has been quite destincive to that of the Scouts. I'm not sure about early Cub uniforms, but by the 1960s they were wearing a uniform similar to that of the English Cubs. It is likely that this was the uniform from the beginning of Cubbing in Chile. I'm not sure about the colors, but the boys wore peaked caps, sweaters or jersies, short pants and kneesocks. The peaked caps were styled somewhat differently from the British peaked caps, but they did hae a peak and piping. I'm not sure about the color of the sweater, the English Cub sweater was green, but it does appear to be sweater or jersey rather than a shirt. The shorts may have been tan like Chiean Scouts rather than grey like English Cubs. The kneesocks appear very similar to those worn by Chiean Scouts. Chilean Cubs appered to have switched to blue uniforms, with baseball-type caps and shirts rather than jersies. The current Cubs appear to also wear blue kneesocks.

Conventions

The Cub uniform in Chile has been quite destincive to that of the Scouts. This has been a hall mark of Cub uniforms in most countries, to make than quite different than the Scout uniforms worn by the older boys.

Chilean Cubs appear to have always worn short pants. It is unclear if Cubs like Scouts began wearing jeans with Cubs sweaters/shirts like the Scouts. To few Chilean Cub images are available at this time to determine this.

Chronology

I'm not sure about early Cub uniforms, but by the 1960s they were wearing a uniform similar to that of the English Cubs. It is likely that this was the uniform from the beginning of Cubing in Chile. I'm not sure about the colors as many of the available images are black and white photographs.

The Chilean Cun uniform was changed significantly--probably in the 1980s, but I am not sureabout the date. The Cun uniform in the 1990s was a blue uniform withy blue baseball cap, shirt, shorts, and kneesocks.

Garments

Chilean Cubs have worn the traditional Cub uniform items.

Caps

Chilean Cubs initially wore tarditional Cub peaked caps. The peaked caps appear to be styled somewhat differently from the British peaked caps, but they did have a peak and piping. Perhaps rather than a different style, the Chilean Cubs just wore their caps differently. Notable, many Cubs appear to fold the peak at the center.

Kerchiefs

All Chilean Cubs wore kerchiefs in the 1960s-70s.

Sweaters

Cubs in the 1960s and 70s wore sweaters or jersies rather like English Cubs, although I am not sure if they were the same green colors. The English Cub sweater was green and worn for years. The Chilean Cubs in the 1960s and 70s do appear to be sweater or jersey rather than a shirt.

Shirt

There does not appear to have been a Cub shirt in the 1960s, rather they wore sweatersor jersies like English Cubs. The Cubs by the 1990s were wearing blue shirts to match their blue shorts.

Pants

All available pictures of Chilean Cubs in full uniform show them wearing short pants. The shorts worn by Chilean Cubs in the 1960s looked to have been similar to the Scout shorts--although because of the black and white photography, I can not be sure about the color. The shorts by the 1990s were destincry from the Scout shorts--being blue rather than tan.

Kneesocks

All available pictures of Chilean Cubs in full uniform show them wearing kneesocks--along with short pants. Again the kneesocks in te 1960s look to be similar to the tan Scout kneesocks. By the 1990s, the Cubs were wearing blue kneesocks.
