Quite a number of other grouups have played a role in the history of British Scouting: Woodcraft Folk, The Order of Woodcraft Chivalry, Kibbo Kift, Life Pioneers, British Scout Federation, Boys' Life Brigade, British Pathfinder Scouts Association, the Outlanders, the Federation of European Scouts UK Association, and other smaller groups. During the early phase of English Scouting various Scouting organisations existed. Many were sponsored by other youth movements such as the Boys' Brigade and the Church Lads' Brigade. The London Diocese, the Salvation Army and the Young Men's Christian Association also sponsored Scout troops.

British Boy Scouts

In the early years the British Boy Scouts posed a serious challenge and lead in the spread of Scouting overseas. Americans and Brits tend to think of the Scouts as one united national association. This is not how Scouting developed in many other countries and there were competing associations in both America and Britain. The most significant challenge to Baden Powell's Scout Association was the British Boy Scouts. Few people today have ever heard of the BBS, but for several years the organization posed a major threat to Baden Powell's desire for a unified national Scouting movement. While the BBS through finacial mismanagement was eclipsed by Baden Powell's Scouts, there is substantial historical evidence to suggest that the competition with the BBS significantly changed the nature of the Scouting movement reducing its miliitary orientation and expanding its international outreach.

Baden Powell Scouts

Since the 1960s there has been a small breakaway association--The Baden Powell Scouts. The United Kingdom has one dominant Scout association, unlike many European countries where the Scout movement is splintered. There are, however, several small Scout associations in the U.K. The U.K. plays host to three independent associations in addition to the mainstream Scout Association. The largest is the Baden-Powell Scouts’ Association (BPSA), closely followed by the pan-European Fédération du Scoutisme Européen (FSE). The best known of these associations is BPSA.

Other Groups

Quite a number of other grouups have played a role in the history of British Scouting: Woodcraft Folk, The Order of Woodcraft Chivalry, Kibbo Kift, Life Pioneers, British Scout Federation, Boys' Life Brigade, British Pathfinder Scouts Association, the Outlanders, the Federation of European Scouts UK Association, and other smaller groups.
