English Boy Scout Publications

Figure 1.--This "Sixer Annual" is undated, but this Cub's long hair help to date it to the 1970s. This was the 1976 annual. The "moptop" long hair of the Cub was very much the fashion of the day. A far cry from today where boy's hair styling has become far more sophisticated.

The British Scout Association (BSA) has sponsored quite a range of differnt publications. The most famous publication is Baden Powell's Scouting for Boys. A popular boys' publication Chums, decided in 1909 to sponsor the BBS--a rival Scouting association to Badeb-Powell's Scouts . Chums (Cassell and Co. London) was a boys' paper with comics launched in 1892. The editors had been working with Baden Powell, but when approached by the break-away British Boy Scouts, they were impressed with the anti-militarism peace message. We have only limited information at this time. The best known publication is Scout Magazine. There were also a vriety of annuals. The annual for Cubs was Sixer Annual. I hink "Sixer" referred to a Cub rank. These nnual, had stories, articles on interesting topics, comics, activities, games, and much more. Besides he BSA publicaions ther were a lot of publications about Scoutng.

Scouting for Boys

The British Scout Association (BSA) has sponsored quite a range of differnt publications. The most famous publication is Baden Powell's Scouting for Boys. General Robert Baden-Powell decided to write down the ideas about Scouting that he had been collecting all his life. As a boy it was the outdoor life that appealed to him. As a soldir it eas the tracking and camping skills. Only later did the idea of a program for boys emerge. Perhaps no other book for, or about, youth organizations has had a greater impact than Baden-Powell's "Scouting for Boys". He borrowed heavily from other pioneers of youth organizaions, especially American naturalist Earnest Thompson Seaton. The style of English is wonderful and it has the most intriguing sections that Scoutmasters and Scouts would balk at today.

Chums

A popular boys' publication Chums, decided in 1909 to sponsor the BBS. Chums (Cassell and Co. London) was a boys' paper with comics launched in 1892. The editors had been working with Baden Powell, but when approached by the break-away British Boy Scouts, they were impressed with the anti-militarism peace message. As a result the editors of Chums decided to promote the BBS. As Chums was read throughout Britain as well as the overseas Dominions, it proved highly successful in spreading the BBS, both within Britain and in British Dominions overseas. Baden Powell's BSA had no comparable overseas outreach. We have only limited information at this time.

Scout Magazine

The best known periodical British Scout publication is Scout Magazine.

Annuals

There were also a variety of annuals for both Scouts and Cubs. These inexpensive editions were popular with British boys for many years. The annual for Cubs was Sixer Annual. I think "Sixer" referred to a Cub rank. Earlier editions were called The Wolf Cub Annual. These annuals, had stories, articles on interesting topics, comics, activities, games, and much more.

Other

Besides he BSA publicaions ther were a lot of publications about Scoutng.
