English School Scout Group: Unidentified School

Figure 1.--This was the schools Advanced 6th Form--Science class in 1957. These bous would be about 17 yeras old. There were six members of the class in the school Scout Troop.

Some youth groups were closely associated with schools. We note that some boys wore their youth group uniforms to school. In some cases there were even special days for this. At this English school boys wore their Scout uniforms for their class portrait. The Scouts here put their blazers on over their Scout uniforms for their class photograph. We are not sure what type of school this is. It is likely a private school or a grammar school.

School Scout Troop

Some youth groups were closely associated with schools. We note that some boys wore their youth group uniforms to school. In some cases there were even special days for this. At this English school boys wore their Scout uniforms for their class portrait. They surely are members of the school Scout Troop. All of the boys in shorts are wearing neckerchiefs, all of the boys in longs are wearing ties.

School Uniform

Most of the boys wear their regular school uniform with blazer, tie, and long trousers. The blazers look to be plain black ones with a destincrive creast or badge. The boys wear the same stripped tie. There are no destinctive ties for prefects, sports, or other honors.

Uniform

The boys participating in Scouting, however, are wearing their short pants Scout uniform. Without exception, all the boys in shorts are wearing their neckerchief, not their school tie. Many schools had their own scout troops, and it would have been perfectly accepted that the Scouts may have had some role to play on ocaissional days, where the rest of the class wouldn't. English Boy Scouts in the 1950s and early 60s still wore a traditional short pants uniform for all their activities.

School Photo Day

The boys in shorts are wearing their school blazers for their class photos and presumably blazers were removed for the photo of the scout troop. It's mix and match depending on what photo they are in. I guess that they were under orders to wear their Scout uniforms to school for the photo day and then just slipped on their blazers for their class photos. The Scouts we also photographed on this day with all the boys wearing their DScout uniforms without their blazers.
