Les Petits Chanteurs de Douai have provided HBC a summary of their choir explaining its foundation, organization, and operation. We will use the information in our various subject categories, but as it is such a nice summary we will post it here with an English translation that one of our readers has gratiously provided.

Depuis leur fondation en 1981, les petits chanteurs, sous la direction de P. Cocqueel et C. Vasseur ont déjà chanté et rayonné dans toute l'Europe, en Amérique du Nord. Dans la droite ligne de Monseigneur Maillet, fondateur des "pueri cantores", les petits chanteurs de Douai regroupent des garçons d'une douzaine d'années qui vivent et découvrent la musique, l'amitié et le monde qui les entoure, lors de leurs déplacements à l'étranger.

Les petits chanteurs habitent Douai, ville de 70.000 habitants, au sud de Lille, près de la frontière belge, suivent leur scolarité dans un collège catholique de Douai où certains sont internes, mais viennent également d'autres lycées de la ville.

Les garçons se retrouvent quatre à six heures par semaine après la classe pour les répétitons, sous la direction musicale de Bertrand Delrot, né en 1960 à Valenciennes, qui prend la succession de C. Vasseur en 1987. Il est titulaire de la médaille d'or en chant du conservatoire du Douai, premier prix de solfège et premier prix d'art lyrique du conservatoire de Valenciennes.

De nombreux échanges culturels avec des choeurs de garçons de réputation internationale, leur participation à des festivals à Douai ou à l'étranger, des sessions régulières de travail intensif, leur collaboration avec des instrumentistes renommés enrichissent le répertoire à capella d'oeuvres exceptionnelles de styles différents.

Le groupe formé d'une soixante de garçons et de jeunes adultes se produit régulièrement cinq fois par an à l'étranger en tournée et chante 70 concerts chaque année lors des vacances scolaires.

Des petits chanteurs mais aussi des enfants dans la joie et l'épanouissement de leur âge, afin que chante en chacun des garçons du choeur cette phrase de J.S. Bach "Jesus, que ma joie demeure".

English Translation

Since their foundation in 1981, the small singers, under the direction of P. Cocqueel and C Vasseur have sung and toured throughout Europe and in North America. In the straight line of Monseigneur Maillet, founder of the "pueri cantores", the small singers of Douai gather boys of a 12 years old, which live and discover the music, the friendship and the world which surrounds them, during their trips abroad.

The small singers live in Douai, a town of 70,000 inhabitants, located to the south of Lille, close to the Belgian border. Theu persue their academic studies in the catholic college of Douai where some are boarders, but some of the choristers also come from other colleges of the city.

The boys gather four to six hours per week after the class for training, under the musical direction of Bertrand Delrot. He was born in 1960 in Valenciennes, having succeeded C Vasseur as the choir master in 1987. He has won the Douai's Academy gold medal in song, and in the academy of Valenciennes, first price of musical theory and first price of lyric art.

The Douai choristers engage in many cultural exchanges with other boy choirs of international reputation. Their participation in festivals in Douai or abroad, regular sessions of intensive work, and their collaboration with famous instrumentalists enrich the a capella repertory with exceptional works of different styles.

The choir is made of sixty boys and young adults. They give regularly concerts 5 times yearly in tours abroad and sings 70 concerts each year during the school holidays.

Small singers but also children with the joy and the blooming of their age, so that in each boy of the choir sings this melody of J.S. Bach "Jesus, joy of man's desiring".
