The School of American Ballet (SAB) is the official training academy of the New York City Ballet. Legendary choreographer George Balanchine and philanthropist Lincoln Kirstein founded the school in 1934. It was an essential first step in their effort to bdegin an American classical ballet company. SAB is located at New York City’s Lincoln Center in Manhatta. It is widely considered to be the premier ballet academy in the United States. The SAB trains more students who persue professional dancing careers than any other American school. SAB gaduates fill the ranks of the New York City Ballet and other leading U.S. as well as some international ballet companies. SAB has for boys as well as girls beginning at age 8 years. About 325 boys and girls attend classes during the School’s 10-month Winter Term. A five-week Summer Course attracts an additional 200 of the nation’s top ballet students. Students have to pass a demanding audition. SAB provides almost $1 million each year in scholarship support Winter Term and Summer Course students. These scholarships, which are allocated on a case-by-case basis, may cover tuition, room and board, travel fees and academic school tuition. One photo shows the younger boys who appear to be part of a group who have just won places by competitive audition. These boys are aged from about 8 to 12 years old. Another photo shows a group of teenage boys (aged about 14 to 18) rehearsing at the bar with their teacher, Mr. Martins. Both photos were taken I think in 2006. Standard rehearsal clothes for boys at this school include black tights, white tee shirts, and the standard ballet slippers with ties across the instep.
