Orchestra Costumes

Figure 1.--These South African boys wear various versions of the school uniform for practice sessions. Boys wear their khaki shirts, black junpers, and blazers. One boy does not wear his uniform.

Youth orchestras often do not require costumes, although dress is usually standardized. This is especially the case for schools which do not have uniforms. Schools without uniforms will often adopt simple orchestra outfits like white shirts and dark pants. Schools with uniforms usually have the children wear their school uniforms for orchestral presentations. They use the dress school uniform, although they wear the every day school uniform for most practice sessions. Some such schools may not use the school uniform, but this is not common.
