American Artists: Robert Peckham: The Farwell Children (1841)

Robert Peckham Farwell children
Figure 1.-- Peckham is believed to have painted the Farwell children (about 1841). This was the year that baby Mary Jane (pictured in the carriage) died. We see the son and daughters of John Thur-ston and Mersylvia Farwell of Fitchburg, Massachusetts. Unlikemany of hi painyings we don't see much of the home furnishings, except the carpet.

Peckham is believed to have painted the Farwell children (about 1841). This was the year that baby Mary Jane (pictured in the carriage) died. We se the sons and daughters of John Thur-ston and Mersylvia Farwell of Fitchburg, Massachusetts. Itv was aparrently painted the year Mary Jane (depicted in her wicker carriage) died. John Farwell ownned a flourishing scythe shop. And like Peckham was a deacon in his local Congregational church, and the two men may have become caquainted in that capacity. The children were: Elizabeth Mersylvia Farwell (1831 - ?), Sarah Charlotte Tucker Farwell (1835 - ), Maria Thurston Farwell (1838 - ?), John Albro Farwell (1833 - ?), and Mary Jane Farwell (c1839 - c1841). Unlike many of his portraits, we do not see many of the room furnishings. Notice that John's outfit does not include marching items. Thereis a black jacket, yellow vest, abnd striped pants. The gurls have open neck lines and wear pantalettes with their colofuln dresses. John has a large poinyed collar and the only colorful item is his vest.
