Unidentified Brother and Sister (United States, 1880s?)

Figure 1.--Unfortunately we know nothing about the children here, except that they are almost surely brother and sister. They look to be about 4-8 years old. We are not entirely sure how to date the dresses the children wear, but the boy's bow suggests the 1880s to us. We would welcome any insights readers may have about the dating. The rug used here seems to have Native American motiffs. We wonder if that doesn't suggest a Western location. Note only the boy wears a floppy bow. This was more of an item for boys. He has had his hair cut short, but breeching will come later. The boy wears a dress with some sailor styling, but made in a plaid material. This was a popular material for boys' dresses. Also notice the length of the dress.

Unfortunately we know nothing about the children here, except that they are American. The portrait shows a boy and girl, almost surely brother and sister. They look to be about 4-8 years old. We are not entirely sure how to date the dresses the children wear. We just do not know enough about dress styling. Reader insights here would be most appreciated. The boy's bow suggests the 1880s to us, perhaps the early 80s. Although not a huge boe, it seems somewhat larger than what we have generally seen in the 1870s. The boy wears a dress with some sailor styling, but made in a plaid material. This was a popular material for boys' dresses. We would guess it was a red plaid. Also notice the length of the dress. The girl wears a two-tone dress, but we have no idea about the colors. There is a definitive waistline with rucking and the sleeves have bloucing at the shoulders. There is some material at te neck on her left side. I;m not sure what that is. She wears a twostrand necklace,
