Biographies: Otto G???????? (Germany, about 1905)

German smock
Figure 1.--We have a portrait of a German boy from Eberswalde. We are not sure just where in Germany that is. The portrait was probably taken about 1905. On the back it reads, "Onkel Otto, Bruder von Hans G?????". This means in English: "Uncle Otto, brother of Hans G?????". Unfortunately the handwritting is not very clear and we cannot make out what this surname might be. Perhaps our readers can make out the family name. Click on the image to see the back.

We have a portrait of a German boy from Eberswalde. We are not sure just where in Germany that is. The portrait was probably taken about 1905. Based on the back of te card the portrait has to have been made in 1902 or later. Thus 1905 seems a good approximation. On the back it reads, "Onkel Otto, Bruder von Hans G?????". This means in English: "Uncle Otto, brother of Hans G?????". Unfortunately the handwritting is not very clear and we cannot make out what this surname might be. Perhaps our readers can make out the family name. I am not sure about his age. I might guess bout 10 years old. Otto wears a front buttoning smock done in a patten with small checks. I'm not sure about the color. He also has a small bow. His collar has stripe detailing. Otto also has a fob to which presumablt a watch is attached so he can keep track of time while studying. We can't tell much more about his clothing as his smock covers his clothing. Presumably he is wearing kneepants as we can make out dark long stockings. We have not noted German boys wearing smocks very commonly. Otto is pictured with a book. We wonder if he wore this smock to school or if it was just for homewear. This is, however, a formal portrait, suggesting he commonly wore it. Otto has short cropped hair, but not as short as some German boys at the time.
