???? Green (United States, 1919)

Figure 1.-- This boy's last name was Green. Unfortunately we do not have his first name or know where he was from. We do know that the portrait was taken in 1919. He wears a knickers suit and long stockings, but it is covered by a heavy belted winter jacket. He has a winter cap and wears glasses. Note the glasses are not round as was common at the time. Usually mother insisted on boys taking off winter jackets for portraits, but for some reason the boy here was photographed in his winter gear. He looks to be about 13 years old.

This boy's last name was Green. Unfortunately we do not have his first name or know where he was from. The heavy outer grmentg and fur cap suggest the upper (northern) Midwest to us. We do know that the portrait was taken in 1919. He wears a knickers suit and long stockings, but it is covered by a heavy belted Norfolk double-breasted winter outergarment. Note that is heavy like an overcoat, but relatively short like a jacket. We are unsure wether to call it a coat or a jacket and are unsure what it was called at the time. This was part of a general sgift away from long overcoats and toward jackets, some shorter than yhis one during the 20th century. Notice the patch pockets, The boy has a winter cap which looks like a fur cap. He wears glasses. Note the glasses are not round as was common at the time. Usually mother insisted on boys taking off winter jackets for portraits, but for some reason the boy here was photographed in his winter gear. He looks to be about 13 years old. After World War I, jackets increasingly replaced overcoats for regular wear, even for boys from affluent families. Social class was, howevr, factor and we see boys from aflent familkies continue to wear log overcoats ;ongr than workling-class boys.
