Herbert and Kurt Hender (Germany, 1930)

Figure 1.--The portrait is undated, but we estimate about 1930. It shows the brother wearing matching casual outfits, open-neck shirts with button-on short pants. Image courtesy of the MD collection.

This portraitis undated, but the brohers look about two years older so we estimate that the portrait was taken about 1930. They wear matching casual open-collar white shirts with button-on short pants. Theolder boy seems a bit old for bitton-on shorts. We wonder if these outfits were made specially rather than brought readymade. Presumably this was their summer outfit. We had thought that the boys might be outfitted in matching clohes primaily for dress occassions, but this outfit was clearly cassual summer attire. Their hair is still cut in bangs, very straight cut bangs with the sides cut at right angles. Both boys have their hair cut precisely the same way so it must have been a style that mother wanted. The portrait is also notable for the colored high-top shoes and stripped socks. I'm not sure what color the shoes were, but they look like they may have been a light brown or perhaps even a red. The shoes look rather old fashioned for 1930, presumbly the family had rather traditional tastes. We have also not noticed German boys wearing stripped socks so commonly.
