Figure 1.-- This cabinet card portrait shows a well-dressed brother and sister in the midst of the Fauntleroy era. The children are Erma and Merle Pontius from Smithville, Ohio. They look to be about 8-10 years old. The portrait is undated, but the clothing and mount style suggests about 1890-95. Erma wears a very simple white dress with long puffed sleeves. Her big brother, Merle, wears a light-colored Little Lord Fauntleroy suit.

Erma and Merle Pontius (United States, 1890-95)

This cabinet card portrait shows a well-dressed, but not elegantky dressed brother and sister in the midst of the Fauntleroy era. The children are Erma and Merle Pontius from Smithville, Ohio. We are not sure of their ethnicity. They look to be about 8-10 years old. The portrait is undated, but the clothing and mount style (pinking with smooth corners) suggests about 1890-95. As was not uncommon at the time, the boy wear fancier clothing than the girl. Erma wears a very simple white dress with long puffed sleeves. Her big brother wears a light-colored Little Lord Fauntleroy suit. As was almost aslways the case, the suit was done with knee pants. We think it is a jacket worn open, probably made to be worn open, altthough this is difficult to tell. It doies not seem to be the classic cut-away jacket. The open jackets were also especially done for Fauntleroy outdits to disply the fancy blouses to best effect. Merle's Fauntleroy blouse has such elaboate ruffles that it is hard to see his jacket in addition to the huge floppy bow. Both children have cdark, but perhaps not black long stockings. Merle is a little old for such an elaborate Fauntleroy outfit, but the style was very popular at the time. Erma had long ringlet curls. Boys at thectime also wore ringlets, but after Merle's hair was cut, sisters might wear riglets as well.
