Joseph Smith (England, 1852)

We have no information about this boy, other than a oil portrait. The boy was was English. His name was Joseph Smith and was 7 years old when painted by G.W. Jackson during May 1852. He is not an artist with which we are familiar. The lack of a background suggests that the artist did the portrait as quicklyas possible. but it is an excellent likeness atr a time that photography was beginning to make real inroads in portraiture. Joseph wears a black jacket and bow-like black tie with a plain white shirt and collar. notice the use of black. Boys in the early 19th century might wear quite coloful clothes. Both boys and men by the mid-19th century were wearing much more somber clothes of the staid Victorian. Also notice the right-side hair part. We are not sure if the standard left-side part for boys was not yet establihed or if this is a reflection of the boy's age.
