Scottish Boys Clothes: The 1850s

We do have a grreat deal of information on Scotland in the 1850s yet. We notice a portrait of a Scottish boy painted in the 1850s. He wears a large white collar, somewhat similar to an Eton collar. We were a little suprised by the jacket/sweater garment that we can not quite figure out. The portait shows that Scottis boys might dress up in kilts for formal occasions.
