Canadian Boys' Clothes: Chronology--Early 20th Century Stores

Figure 1.--There were of course few places that boys would like to go to more than an ice cream parlour. The boy on the left appears to be wearing a silk shirt as it is very high sheen and is sharing a what appears to be a milkshake on a metal stool with the boy wearing a sailor suit on the right. Image courtesy of the CO collection.

We have some interesting images from the period showing children in stores such as grocery stores and drug stores. They provide wonder glimses into life styles in the early 20th century. On the previous page two children are shopping during the winter, notice the heavy clothes. Also notice that most goods were behind the counter, There was no self service at the time. We have another image from an ice cream parlour in New Brunswick. There were of course few places that boys would like to go to more than an ice cream parlour. The boy on the left appears to be wearing a silk shirt as it is very high sheen and is sharing a what appears to be a milkshake on a metal stool with the boy wearing a sailor suit on the right (figure 1). Both boys wear kneepants and black long stockings. The boy in the sailor suit has a straw hat, I'm not sure what kind of headwear the other noy has.
