United States Boys' Clothes: Minnesota Family (mid-1890s)

Figure 1.-- Here we see an unidentified Minnesota family with two young children. They look to be 1-3 years old, perhaps 4 years. The baby wears a white infant dress. The older boy wears a rather loud tartan kilt suit. He has short cropped hair. Many boys that age still had curls. The portrait is undated but the partially pinked mount helps to date the portrait to 1888-95. We think the mid-90s is the most likely. This is because of mother's dress. There is no way to be precise here or to know how closely this mother followed fashion. Dresses after the early-90s developed huge baloon sleeves which you can see here. The studio was Fred Mulller in Owatonna, Minnesota.
