This makes us think that this is may be a cottage, probably by a lake, rented for the occasion. Families still tended to be large in thr 1890s, meaning that family reunions could be major affairs. They were often held at the family homestead somewhere in rural America. This one looks more like a rented cottage, somewhere in the Northeast given the folliage. Strangely for such a large group, there is only one child, but he is done up in a fashionabnle outfit with huge bow and sailor cap. Unfortunately we do not have a closeup. He looks to be about 6 years old. The portrait is undated, but the dresses with the large puffed sleeves look to us like the mid-90s. Many of the men wear caps, suggesting to us a casual affair.
