United States Boys' Headwear: Chronology--The 1860s

Figure 1.-- This CDV portrait is undated. We know the boys are American, probably photographed in the late-1860s. Note the rounded-crown hat the one boy is holding. There were other styles, but this seems to have been the most common. We're not sure why one boy has his hat and the other boy does not.

We note a great deal about headwear styles in the 1860s because photography became so common place during the decade. Photography existed in the 1850s, but the number of images are relatively small and it was not very common in dags and ambros for boys to wear their headwear. Most portraits did not include the hradwear, but quite a number did and given the number of portraits taken we know a good deal about boys' headwear during the 1860s. Many CDVs takebn during the 1860s are standing portraits (rare for dags and anbros) and quite a number of the standing portraits have the boys holding their headwear, but less commonly wearing it. We note a lot of boys beginning in the mid-19th century wearing hats with rounded crowns. Here the crowns as well as the brims varied widely. Earlier they were well-rounded crowns. By the the 1860s we notice some more shallow crowns. Not all crowns were rounded. We note one boy, C. Stewart, in 1865 who had an indented crown hat. We also notice widely varied brims. These hats are a little difficult to assess becaue they were varied and because pgotograhy was less common in the 1850s and thus we have fewer images to comare with. These rounded-crown hats were by far the most common style worn by boys in the 1860s.

We note a great deal about hat styles in the 1860s because photography became so common place during the decade. Headwear Styles

W note them being worn with different types of suits. Strangely we seem to see fewer military styled caps in the 60s than the 50s despite the fact that the Civil War dominated the 1860s.

Activities

Most of 1860s photography was studio portraits with the children dressed up in their best clothes including headwear. Now most childrn atthe timedid not have large wardrobes. Most children, however, especially children from fmilies that could afford photography, did have at least one best set of clothing. So what we are not seeing is how boys dressed normally for everyday activities. Here we have to rely mr on available paintings. One such paunting done in 1869 is George Lanbdin, 'The Biddle Children on the Schuylkill' shows rural children in the summer time fishing. The bows are wearing wht looks like inexpensive wide-brimmed staw hats. We thinks that these hats were fairly common in the 19th century, but rarelyappear in studio portraits. The rounded-crown felt caos we see here are much more common.
