This photograph was titled "First Suspenders". The boy in 1904 is clearly pleased with himself. Notice the buttons on the waisband of his trousers. Also note that boys who wore suspenders had to tuck their sweaters into their pants. A reader tells us, "This style of wearing suspenders for knee pants and short trousers over sweaters was very common not only in America, but in in Switzerland, Germany, France and other European countrie up through the 1950s and often for older boys up to the age of 12 and 13 frequently. But in the 1920s and early 1930s it was the fashion in Germany to wear belts on top of the sweater just for show and not to hold up trousers." Interestingly, American boys necer took to wearing belts over their sweaters.
