American Boys' Lace Collars: Size

Figure 1.--The classic American Little Lord Fauntleroy suit was a cut-away jacket worn with a fauntleroy vlouse done with aruffked collar and often flopoy bow. Lace collars were commonlky pinned on to collar buttoning jackets. They certainly existed but were much less common than the riffled collars. The portait here show a classic Funtleroy lace cpllar. The boy is unidentified. All we kmnow about hi, is that he loved in Oak Oark, Illinois, a Chicago neighborhood.

Little Lord Fauntleroy suits are generally associated with large lace collars. This is a misconception, at least in America where Fauntleroy suits were most common. American boys wore large white collars with their Fauntleroy suits, but they were for the most part not lace collars. Lace collars were more prominent in Europe, but in America, boys mostly wore ruffled collars with Fauntleroy suits. Lace collars would have been much more expensive. We do see some, but a small proprtioin. The alrge collars we see are ruffled collars. Some have lace worked into them. Nut for the most part they were basic linnen or cotton collars. We see some with cut-out lace, but that as not true lace. Actual lace collars were a small fraction of the Fauntleroy collars. And they were not as big as the ruffled callars we more commonly see. Some were quite large, at least realtive to the size of the boys who wore them.
