Preparatory Schools Boarding: Weekday Activities--Free Time

Figure 1.-- One of the real attractive aspects of boarding school for boys is there is never any shortage of playmates. During free time a pal can always be found for whatever type of game a boy may want to play. And groups can be found to field teams for sports. Here the boys are playing rounders.

Boarding children especially look forward to free time when they can play. The amount of free time given to the children varies quite a bit from school to school. Here age is a factor. The older boys may be thinking more about their studies and CEE. The younger children are much more interested in play time. The schools also vary as to when the children have free time. And not only are playmates available, but also a range of appealing facilities. And there are facilities and fields easily at hand for play. Many schools in recent years have expanded their facilities and recreation is given more consideration than was the case earlier. Durring the cold weather there are indoor play areas for active games. Schools also have have a good supply of board games. When the weather is better there are also outdoor facilities for the children, often including tennis courts and swimming pools. Som schools have extensive play ground equipment or even an assault-course type set up. Often for younger boys one of the most popular places is a wooded area where they can build dens which often take on the chracter of forts.

School Attitudes

Free time activities varied widely from school to school. This varied with the facilities available and the attitude of the schools toward free time. Quite a few schools by the 1980s had given more thought and resources to free time and recreational activities than was the case previously. Some schools put much more of an emphasis on prep than other schools. Thus not only were there afternoon prep, but also evening prep. Other schools saw some free play time as a important activity in its own right.

Age

Age is a factor with free time. The older boys may be thinking more about their studies and CEE. The younger children are much more interested in play time.

Schedule

The schools also vary as to when the children have free time. Normally the children have free time after games in the afternoon. Some schools may schedule classess or prep in the afteroon, but free time was also common. This may be only a few minutes after games, but at some schools an hour or more may be scheduled for free time in the afternoon. There may also be free time in the evening after dinner. Some schools use this time for prep, but free time was also often scheduled. And this can vary seasonally. Often more free time is scheduled during the summer when the days are longer. Here more time is available for the older children as bed times are staggered by age.

Free Time Activities

Opportunities for free time occurred at various times during the day which affected the activities involved. Short periods before lunch and dinner might be used for short games of ping pong or pool, depending on school rules. For te most part free time during weekdays was mostly in the evening after dinner. This mean that free time for the younger children was very limiited because of their early bed times. The older boys if prep was not required could persue a range of activities. Often some boys grvitated toward the available computers which were becoming more available. Some schools had gyms which were made available. Some children enjoyed board games. Chess was popula, but most schools had a variety of games available. Soe even had a games room. Others might read the newspapers or work on a research assignment. Several schools had model rooms where the children could work on various projects. During the summer boys might work in the computer nets or enjoy a variety of outdoor games.
