Weldon's Suits: 1922

Figure 1.--These fashions were from the early 1920s, we believe 1922. The two sailor suits were for boys up to 8-10 yeas of age. The two short pants suits were for boys up to 14 years.

Two short pants suits were offered for boys 6/8-14 years of age. Both were tweed suits worn with Eton collars. One was shown with a checjerd material, but this was up to the mother purchasing the pattern. The styling of both suits was quite similar. One had a belted back. There is also a serge suit for a younger boy included in this grouping.

Weldon's

Weldon's appears to have been a major supplier of pattrns to British mothers. We do not know when the company bergan operating. We have an issue of Weldon's Home Dressmaker devoted entirely to boys' clothing. It is undated, but is ussue N°248 (figure 1). It looks to us like about 1922. These pattern bookles were published by Weldon's Ladies Journal in Britain and Canada and provided advice, fiction, household hints, and fashion news to women. One of the services the magazine provided to its subscribers was the inclusion of a fashion portfolio that illustrated all of the new pattern releases--and a set of free sewing patterns. One reviewer maintains that "The Weldon patterns are some of the most stylish of their era." A British homemaker in the 1920s, however, recalls, "We always used Weldon's paper patterns for cutting out, and we had one for almost anything. They were very fragile and had to be used carefully, using pin holes that had been used before. When Woolworth's opened in Leigh, we were able to buy Butterick patterns which were more up to date. We are unsure just when Weldon's was first published, but we have noted issues in the 1890s-30s.

Two short pants suits were offered for boys 6/8-14 years of age. Both were tweed suits worn with Eton collars. Suit: 61914

Suit 61914 is a two-piece short pants tweed suit. The jacket is three-button single breasted. It is show in a checked pattern, but this was up to the mother purchasing the pattern. It had a back belt. It was shown worn with an Eton collar and stripped tie, but thuis was not part of the design of the suit. The suit is for boys 8-14 years of age. The jacket is three button with patch waist-level pockets and rather long short pants. The kneesocks have a pattern at the turnover cuff and shows modern style shoe.

Suit: 62718

The other pattern number is 62718. The jacket is a three-button single breasted tweed suit. This is a three-piece short pants suit with a matching vest. A herringbone tweed is illustrated. It is shown being worn with a necktie and Eton collar. There are two side pockets. The shorts are long length coming to just above the knees. The knee socks are plain turnover (assume gray) and modern style tie shoes. The suit is for boys 8-14 years of age. It is not clear to me why this suit was made for boys befginning age 8 while te other suit was worn by boys age 6 and 7 years as well.

Sailor suit: 64966

The sailor suits are discussed separately.

Serge suit: 66036

A serge suit is shown suitable in sizes 1-6 years. Serge was a heavy wool material, commonly used for dark winter sailor suits. The jacket buttons to the collar. It is worn with a wide white collar with detailing and matching sleeve cuffs. The collar and cuffs were separate pin on items and not part of a blouse. The patterns for the collar and cuffs were included. Th collar is shaped rather like an Eton collar, but is not stiff. The matching short pants have four button button decorative trim like kneepants. The suit is shown worn with three-quarter white socks with decorative tops and strap shoes.
