English mail order catalogs offer a very useful time line on changing fashion trends. English mail order catalogs and newspaper ads provide great detail on fashion trends. We have very few 1960s catalogs or advertisements at this time. We
have one ad for suits. We have one ad for suits. We have another ad for playsuits in a wide variety of styles. One of our HBC readers rembers games at the time.We would be interested in any that our English readers might be able to contribute.
The advertisement here is an English advertisement for school suits (figure 1). We are not sure where and when it appeared. It looks like an early 1960s ad to us. The use of the old monetary system helps to date it. We are not sure how the sizes here compare with age. Note that knicker is being used in the sence of short trousers. This is an older term which we do not notice brong used after the early 1960s.
We have another ad for playsuits in a wide variety of styles. One of our HBC readers remembers games at the time, but he and his mates did not have such formal outfits. We do not know in what catalog the ad appeared. We are not positive about the date, but believe it was 1967. The ad is not dated and in fact could have been in use for several years. The black and white format suggests that it first appeared earlier. They were the Ranger brand of playsuits. I'm not entirely sure of how they were marketed.
We note a Trutex Schoolwear add from 1969. Trutex was one of the primary manufacyurers of schoolwear in Britain. The interesting thing is that the boy on the left is David Parfitt who played the younger boy in the TV show “And Mother Makes Three”. Many of these young actors also modelled clothing, The other thing is that the Trutex schoolwear the boys are shown modelling here is the same range as HBC shows slightly older boys modelling on the school uniform.
