Many of the boys outfits in the 1850s are not matching jackets and trousers. This was also true for adult men. The common convention was a solid colored jacket and stripped or checked trousers. The trousers were usually long, but older boys might wear ankle-length trousers--sometimes with pantlettes.
The Journal des Marchands Tailleurs was published in Paris. The title translates as the "Magazine of the Merchants Tailors". We believe they published during 1856-64. We have little information about the publication, but we have a number of fashion plates from the magazine with many images of mens' and boys' clothes. We are not
sure, however, at this time what kind of text accpmpanied these fashion plates, explaining the various outfits that were depicted in
the plates.

The trousers were usually long, but older boys might wear ankle-length trousers--sometimes with pantlettes. Note that in the image here yjat the boys' outfit is quite similar to the mens' outfits, except that thr boy's jacket is quite short. We have seen some shorter's men jackets in the 1850s, but they had tails.
