French Mail Order Catalogs with Boys Clothings: 1959 Play Outfits for Boys and Girls

Figure 1.--This adverisement appeared in the 1959 French La Redoute catalog showing a wide range of smocks. Some were smocks for boys and one could be worn by both boys and girls.

Le Redoute also offered other play suits other than rompers. There were both short and long pants garments. Some of the short pants outfits look like they could have been worn for more formal events as well as casual play. We have few have details from the ad copy text with information on ages, materials, and dertailing. These look, however, to be pre-school fashions. Note thattheboys in long pants bib-front pants wear "T" shirts or simple short-sleeved shirts while the boys in shorts sets wear puff-sleeved blouses which were sold as separate garments.

Garment P

Ad copy not available. The garment is bib-front shorts with an embroidered animal on the bib.

Garment R

Ad copy not available. The garment is a bib-front overalls-like long pants garment with colored accented trim.

Garment S

Ad copy not available. The garment is a bib-front overalls-like calf-length pants garment.

Garment T

Ad copy not available. The garment is blouse with a trimmed Peter Pan collar and puff sleeves.

Garment U

Unfortunately I can't read the ad copy. The garment is suspender shorts with cuffs.

Garment V

Unfortunately I can't read the ad copy. The garment is a blouse with puff sleeves. The regular collar is worn open-necked which does not seem to go with the more formal puff sleeves.

Garment W

All I can make out on the ad copy is "cullotes", of course meaning short pants. In this case suspender shorts.

Garment X

Notice that the girl's Peter Pan blouse seems very similar to the boy's blouse, garment T.

Garment Y

Notice that the girl's suspender skirt has a cross bar while this is lacking on the boys' sispender shorts.
