French Mail Order Catalogs with Boys Clothings: 1959 Outfits for Younger Children

Figure 1.--This adverisement appeared in a 1959 French newspaper showing a wide range of infant outfits. The romper suits in sizes up to about 4 years for boys.

HBC is not sure of the catalog company offered these clothes, but it is reportedly a large, well known Parisian department store. The store offered quite a wide range of outfits for boys and girls. I am going to try to type out the ad text so we can better unnderstand who was wearing what. This is going to take a little time.

Outfit A

Thisis clearly a shorts sey for a boy. The ad copy reads, "Beau ?? ?? en pure laine mérinos avec ?? ganu bandes jacavard blanches sur fond rouge, rose, bleu, ??, ?? ?? ?? tone grisb ??." It was for a boy 1-3 years and cost Fr 780-985, depending on the size. The ad copy describes the sweater and not the shorts.

Outfits B-D

The models appear to be girls because of the hair and kirts, but the garments are sweaters which could presumably be worn by either boys or girls.

Outfit E

The ad copy read, "Joue costume 2 piéces redoufe (veste et bloomer) en beau. Fil d'Ecosse mercerisé a fi?? rayurea ciel/blanc. La coi de la veste est blanc ??? que le bord des pebbes manches. Cullote avec élastique a la taule et aus jambes. Pour enfants jusqu'a 2 ans. Fr 1,525" I'm not sure about all the words, but this was made in sizes for infants up to 2 years. If I understand the French reader who provided this advertisement correctly, this was a boys' outfit.

Outfit F

The ad copy reads "Barboteuse Reboble en zéphyr á damier rose, bleu, vert ou jaune. 1 an Fr560 et Fr25 car1 an jusqu'a a 4 ans." I'm not sure I made out all the French words correctly, but this bib-front romper suit was a boy's garment in sizes up to 4 years. It was available in several colors, including rose (pink?), blue, green, and jaune?. Notice the blouse with puffed sleeves that is pictured with it.
